India’s civil aviation safety regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), will investigate a false alarm scare on an Air India flight from Frankfurt to Delhi after air traffic control (ATC) reported receiving a signal indicating a possible hijacking of the aircraft, sources told businessline.

According to sources, the pilot-in-command denied squawking transponder code 7500, while ATC maintained that it had received the signal from the aircraft.

In aviation parlance, transponder code 7500 is used to indicate unlawful interference with an aircraft, including hijacking.

Its transmission triggers a special emergency indication at radar ATC facilities. Meanwhile, all passengers, crew members and the aircraft are safe, a source said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday on flight AI2030, which was diverted to Jaipur. The Boeing 787-9 aircraft landed safely at Jaipur International Airport, with 306 passengers on board.

As per sources, following its arrival in Jaipur, the aircraft was moved for security checks. Passengers on board were disembarked under the supervision of security agencies and taken to the terminal building.

On its part, Air India said that the flight was diverted following a perceived security concern.

“The relevant security agencies carried out the necessary checks and have cleared the aircraft and crew. All passengers were disembarked, underwent security checks, and have since reboarded the aircraft,” the airline said in a statement.

After the checks, the flight continued on its journey to Delhi.
